PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Exploring the origins of conflict in prehistoric Scotland.

Lucidblack Ltd was appointed as Principal Contractor by National Museums Scotland for Scotland’s First Warriors, a major temporary exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Working closely with the NMS project and design teams, we managed the technical development, manufacture and installation of the exhibition build within Special Exhibitions Gallery 2. Our scope included bespoke exhibition walling and setworks, display plinths and furniture, case backboards, AV housings, integrated graphic elements, specialist finishes and gallery decoration, alongside the coordination of graphics, electrical and other specialist contractors.

With more than 200 objects forming part of the exhibition, the build required careful consideration of conservation requirements, durability and the integration of significant archaeological material within the finished environment. Our Edinburgh workshop allowed the majority of elements to be manufactured and pre-finished off site, giving us close control over quality while reducing the time and disruption required within the museum.

Acting as Principal Contractor under CDM 2015, Lucidblack also managed the construction phase, site logistics, Health & Safety, quality control and coordination through to final snagging and handover.

Sustainability was considered throughout the project, with existing exhibition elements reused where possible, responsibly sourced materials, efficient material optimisation and consolidated logistics forming part of our approach. Project carbon was also recorded and reported in line with National Museums Scotland’s sustainability requirements.

The completed exhibition opened at the National Museum of Scotland on 27 June 2026 and runs until 16 May 2027
